The Perrin Technique: Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME

I am qualified in The Perrin Technique, a practice which works towards diagnosing and treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), more commonly known as Myalgic Encephalitis or ‘ME’. The aim of this technique is to alleviate symptoms or to cure the patient entirely.

Developed by Raymond Perrin at the University of Salford, The Perrin Technique is based on the validated scientific research that CFS/ME is caused by a reversal of lymphatic drainage, especially from the brain, causing a build-up of toxins. Secondary factors such as stress, infections and spinal misalignment impact on the body’s nervous system which in turn creates a negative feedback to the brain and spine. In a healthy body, these toxins should be able to drain out via the lymphatic system, but in an ME sufferer their path is blocked, leading to a build up of toxins over a period of time.

The Perrin Technique’s approach to treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is to open up the flow of lymphatic fluids in the system and rid the body of poisonous elements, allowing it to function properly.

About Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME

ME/CFS is a chronic illness which can have devastating effects on the lives of sufferers. It is characterised by debilitating symptoms such as depression, ongoing and newly experienced chronic tiredness, sleep disorder, headaches, sensitivity to sound and light, a sore throat and back, neck and muscle pain. It can leave previously healthy, vibrant individuals unable to perform even the most basic of activities.

In some cases, ME can be triggered by a traumatic event or infection, but this is not true in all cases.

Diagnosing ME/CFS with the Perrin Technique

In seeking to diagnose ME, I carry out a physical examination of the patient, checking for a specific set of physical symptoms. Based on this examination and the information provided by the patient about their lifestyle and medical history, I am able to provide a diagnosis based on the principles of The Perrin Technique. This process usually lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME

As with Osteopathy, The Perrin Technique uses hands-on processes such as lymphatic drainage and physical manipulation to stimulate the movement of lymphatic fluids around the brain, the body and the spine. This not only works towards detoxifying the body, but also allowing it to flow and function naturally to prevent the future build up of unhealthy materials.

Patients are also given self-massage techniques for lymphatic drainage in conjunction with exercises to complement the hands-on treatment. Supplementation is also recommended at the consultation.

The Perrin Technique: Research

There is still debate in the medical and scientific community as to the causes of ME and appropriate treatments and, while I cannot guarantee success, my experience of The Perrin Technique and that of many of my patients has been very positive. 30% of patients find that their symptoms disappear entirely and others find that they are alleviated or that their frequency is reduced.
